How to Get Your NYS Security Guard License — Step by Step

Here is the exact path from no license to working guard. We walk every student through this in class, and our staff can help you at any step.

Take the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Course

This is the required first step for everyone. We teach it six days a week, 8AM–4PM, at 1891 Fulton Street — $100, walk-ins welcome. You leave the same day with your certificate of completion.

Get Fingerprinted at IdentoGO

Schedule at identogo.com or 877-472-6915. The office is two blocks from our school, so many students do this the same week. Bring photo ID; fingerprints are sent electronically for your background check.

Submit Your NYS Application

Complete the Security Guard application (DOS-1206) with your 8-Hour certificate and the $36 fee to the NYS Department of State, Division of Licensing Services. You must have a NYS DMV photo on file — if you don’t have a NYS ID or license, visit a DMV first for a free photo-only transaction.

Good news: once your 8-Hour is done and your application is submitted, you can start working right away while it processes — your employer completes the Notice of Employment section.

Complete the 16-Hour On-the-Job Training

Required within 90 days of starting work as a security guard. We offer it for $200 — schedule it with us as soon as you’re hired so the deadline never sneaks up on you.

Renew & Stay Current

Your registration lasts two years. Complete the 8-Hour Annual In-Service ($80 with us) each calendar year to stay eligible for renewal.

Have a record? An arrest or conviction doesn’t automatically disqualify you — NYS reviews each case individually, and many applicants with past convictions are approved. Ask us; we’ve helped many students through it.

Add Fire Guard Certificates (Optional but Powerful)

Shelters, event venues, and fire-watch posts require FDNY Certificates of Fitness. Our F-01, F-02, F-03, and F-04 exam prep courses are 100% online — $35 each — with practice exams and the official FDNY booklets included.
