1Make Sure You're Eligible
Before enrolling, confirm you meet New York State's basic requirements:
- At least 18 years old
- U.S. citizen or legal work authorization
- Valid government-issued photo ID (you'll need a NYS driver's license or non-driver ID for your registration card)
- No disqualifying criminal convictions
2Take the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Course — $100
This one-day course is the mandatory first step for every security guard in New York State. It covers your legal authority and its limits, emergency procedures, communication, ethics, and professional conduct.
Classes run Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Saturday, 8 AM – 4 PM at our Brooklyn center — walk in with photo ID by 8:00 AM, or reserve your seat online. You receive your certificate of completion the same day.
3Get Fingerprinted
Fingerprinting is done electronically through IdentoGO by IDEMIA. Schedule at identogo.com using Service Code 1545R1. The fee is $102.50, payable to IDEMIA. You'll receive two receipts — one goes with your application, one goes to your employer.
4Apply for Your NYS Security Guard Registration — $36
Submit your Security Guard Registration application to the NYS Department of State with your training certificate, fingerprint receipt, and the $36 application fee. We help every student complete the application step by step — it's included with your training.
Most applicants receive their registration card within a few weeks. Once you've completed the 8-Hour course and submitted your application with the Notice of Employment section completed by your employer, you can begin working while your application processes.
5Get Hired & Complete the 16-Hour OJT — $200
Within 90 days of being hired, New York State requires the 16-Hour On-the-Job Training course. It runs Thursday & Friday, 8 AM – 4 PM — both days must be attended. We recommend taking it right after your 8-Hour course so you're fully trained before your first shift.
Want it all at once? Our Fast Track Package ($280) bundles both required courses plus license application help, and the Gold Package ($300) adds Fire Guard exam prep — job-ready in as little as four days.
6Renew Every Year — $80
All registered NYS security guards must complete the 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training each calendar year to keep their registration active. It's offered every day, Monday through Saturday, with your certificate issued the same day.
Boost Your Pay With Extra Certifications
A guard license opens the door — additional certifications open better-paying ones. Many NYC posts require or prefer FDNY Fire Guard certification (F-01, F-02, F-03, F-04 — exam prep from $35, online anytime), and CPR/First Aid, flagger training, and OSHA credentials all make you more hireable. Eligible NYC residents can also train free with a Workforce1 voucher.
