Everything students ask us about getting and keeping a New York State security guard registration — eligibility, fingerprinting, fees, timelines, and record questions — answered in one place. Fees listed are set by New York State and are subject to change.
You must be at least 18 years old, have a valid government-issued photo ID (you will need a NYS driver’s license or non-driver ID for the registration card photo), complete training at a DCJS-approved school, and pass a fingerprint background check. No prior experience is required.
Two courses are required: the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training ($100) before you apply, and the 16-Hour On-the-Job Training ($200) within 90 days of being hired. After that, an 8-Hour Annual In-Service course ($80) is required every calendar year.
Fingerprinting is done electronically through IdentoGO by IDEMIA at a New York location — schedule at identogo.com using Service Code 1545R1. The fee is $102.50, payable to IDEMIA. You will receive two receipts: one goes with your application, one goes to your employer. Note that fingerprint receipts are valid for 5 months, so submit your application within that window.
The initial application fee is $36, payable to the NYS Department of State. Registration renewal (every two years) is $25. A duplicate card or a name/address change each cost $25. These fees are separate from training costs and fingerprinting.
Most applicants receive their registration card within a few weeks; applications requiring additional review can take longer. The good news: once you have completed the 8-Hour course and submitted your application with the Notice of Employment section completed by your employer, you can begin working while your application processes.
Possibly — a record does not automatically disqualify you. New York reviews applications with criminal history case by case under Article 23-A of the Correction Law, considering the nature of the offense, time elapsed, and evidence of rehabilitation. Many applicants with past convictions are approved.
Yes. Star Security Training is an approved Workforce1 partner — eligible NYC residents can get the 8-Hour, 16-Hour OJT, and license processing covered for free. Here is exactly how the program works.
Yes — walk-ins are welcome Monday through Saturday at 1891 Fulton Street, Suite F, Brooklyn. Arrive by 8:00 AM sharp with your photo ID to register and start the same day. You can also reserve your seat online in about two minutes.
An armed security guard registration additionally requires a valid NYS pistol permit and completion of the 47-Hour Firearms Training course, plus an 8-Hour Annual Firearms course each year. Call us at 718-773-5000 to discuss the armed track.
