How to Become a NYS Licensed Security Guard & Get Hired!

Are you looking for a stable, in-demand career in the security industry? Becoming a licensed security guard in New York State is your first step! Here’s everything you need to know—from eligibility requirements to getting hired.
🔎 Step 1: Do You Meet the Requirements?
Before you can start your security guard training, you must:
✔ Be at least 18 years old
✔ Be a U.S. citizen or have legal work authorization
✔ Have no serious criminal convictions (some may disqualify you)
✔ Have a valid Social Security Number (SSN)
✔ Be able to speak, read, and write English
📚 Step 2: Complete the Required Training
To qualify as an unarmed security guard, you must complete:
✔ 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course – A one-day introductory class covering security basics, legal responsibilities, and professional conduct.
✔ 16-Hour On-the-Job Training (OJT) Course* – A two-day class with hands-on instruction on emergency procedures, public relations, report writing, and conflict resolution.
If you want to become an armed guard, additional firearm training is required.
*It is highly recommended to take the 16 hour on-the-job training course immediately after taking the 8 hour pre-assignment course, even though it is not technically necessary to get hired. Employers prefer to hire prospective candidates who have both.
📄 Step 3: Apply for Your Security Guard License
Once you complete your training, you need to:
✔ Get fingerprinted via IdentoGO for a background check.
✔ Submit your license application to the NYS Department of State.
✔ Pay the licensing fee ($36 application fee + fingerprinting fee).
Your license is valid for two years and must be renewed before it expires.
🛡 Step 4: Stay Certified & Maintain Your License
✔ Take the 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training Course every year to keep your license active.
✔ Renew your security license every two years through the NYS Division of Licensing Services.
💼 Step 5: Get Hired as a Security Guard
Once you’re licensed, it’s time to land a job! Here’s how:
✔ Apply to security firms, retail stores, hospitals, event venues, and corporate offices.
✔ Check with security companies like Star Security Training for job leads.
✔ Network with professionals and attend job fairs
✔ Get additional certifications
- Fireguard (F-02, F-04, F-80, etc.) – Required for many security jobs in NYC.
- CPR & First Aid Certification – Employers prefer guards with life-saving skills.
- Armed Guard License – Higher-paying jobs for those who want to carry a firearm.
- OSHA Certification – Many construction sites require security guards with OSHA training.
- Executive Protection Training – Ideal for high-profile security positions.
