Overview
The 16-Hour On-the-Job Training course is the second mandatory training requirement for New York State security guards. This two-day course builds on the foundation of the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training, diving deeper into topics such as access control, fire prevention, terrorism awareness, and professional conduct. You must attend both Day 1 and Day 2 to receive your certificate of completion.
Day 1 vs. Day 2 Breakdown
| Day 1 (Thursday) — 8 hours | Access control, fire safety and prevention, emergency procedures, terrorism awareness, workplace violence prevention |
| Day 2 (Friday) — 8 hours | Patrol techniques, incident reporting, legal updates, customer service, use of technology, career development |
Important — Both Days Required. You must attend both Day 1 (Thursday) and Day 2 (Friday) to complete the 16-Hour OJT and receive your certificate. If you miss either day, you will need to retake the full two-day course. Plan accordingly.

Partnering Program Provides Free Security Guard Training For Eligible Candidates. Star Security Training is approved to accept Workforce1 training vouchers. Workforce1 is an NYC government-sponsored job training program. Approved candidates receive vouchers good for free 8-Hour Pre-Assignment, 16-Hour On-The-Job Training, and license processing.
