From Guard to Supervisor: How to Grow in the Security Industry

The security industry in New York is booming—with increased demand for trained officers in residential buildings, commercial properties, schools, hospitals, and events. But being a security guard doesn’t have to be your final stop. With the right training, mindset, and work ethic, you can move up the ladder and step into a supervisor or managerial role.

At Star Security Training, we don’t just train guards—we build careers. Here’s how you can go from patrolling posts to leading teams.

1. Master the Basics with Required Training

If you haven’t already completed your:

  • 8-Hour Pre-Assignment
  • 16-Hour On-the-Job Training
  • 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training

Start there. These are the building blocks of your career. Without them, promotions will remain out of reach. Good supervisors know policy, procedures, and protocols like the back of their hand—and that starts with mastering the basics.

2. Add Extra Certifications

To stand out, you’ll need to show initiative and versatility. Consider adding:

  • CPR & First Aid Certification
  • OSHA 10/30 Hour Certification
  • Fire Guard (F-01, F-02, F-89)
  • Armed Guard Training (if applicable)

These certifications make you eligible for more specialized and higher-paying jobs and show employers that you’re committed to excellence.

3. Build Your Leadership Skills

A supervisor is not just a more experienced guard—they’re a leader. Start by:

  • Mentoring new guards on site
  • Volunteering to write post reports or assist with scheduling
  • Learning how to de-escalate situations calmly and professionally
  • Practicing good communication and conflict resolution

If your company offers a leadership development course or supervisor training—take it. If not, suggest one!

4. Be Reliable and Professional

We can’t stress this enough. If you want to be promoted:

  • Show up early
  • Follow protocols to the letter
  • Maintain a neat, professional appearance
  • Be respectful, alert, and proactive

Supervisors are often chosen not just for their skills, but for their attitude and dependability.

5. Let Your Ambition Be Known

Many guards stay in the same position for years simply because they never ask for more.

Let your employer or site manager know:

“I’m interested in growing with the company. I’d like to learn more about becoming a supervisor.”

Ask what skills or experience you’ll need, and start preparing.

6. Train with the Best

At Star Security Training, we’ve helped thousands of students launch and grow their security careers. If you’re ready to level up, we can help you:

  • Get the certifications that employers love
  • Build confidence through hands-on training
  • Connect with job opportunities that match your ambition
