Keeping your NYS security guard registration active is simple — but miss it, and you cannot legally work until it is fixed. Here is exactly what renewal involves, in three steps.
Step 1: Complete Your 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training
New York requires every registered security guard to complete an 8-Hour Annual In-Service course each calendar year. At Star Security Training the course is $80, runs daily Monday through Saturday from 8 AM to 4 PM, and walk-ins are welcome — bring your photo ID and you will leave with your certificate the same day. Sunday sessions are available for groups of 10 or more with pre-registration.
Step 2: Renew Your Registration Every Two Years
Your security guard registration card is valid for two years. The Department of State mails renewal notices to the address on file, and the renewal fee is $25. This is why keeping your address current matters — if you have moved, file a Change Notice with the Division of Licensing Services ($25) so your renewal paperwork actually reaches you.
Step 3: Give Your Employer Proof
Provide a copy of your in-service certificate to your employer for their personnel file, and keep the original with your records. Employers are required to maintain proof of training for every guard, and having yours ready is the difference between staying on the schedule and getting pulled off posts.
Lost your registration card? You can request a duplicate from the Division of Licensing Services for $25. Call us at 718-773-5000 if you need help figuring out which form to file.
